چکیده

The Cahn-Hilliard equation is very important in materials science. It is a conservation law which describes important qualitative behaviors of two-phase systems, namely, the phase separation process in a binary alloy. This phenomenon can be observed, for instance, when the alloy is cooled down sufficiently. One then observes a partial nucleation (i.e., the apparition of nucleides in the material) or a total nucleation (the socalled spinodal decomposition: the mixture quickly becomes inhomogeneous, forming a fine-grained structure). We refer the reader to [15] for more details; see also [54, 55] for a qualitative study of the spinodal decomposition. The starting point of the Cahn-Hilliard theory is a free energy ψ = ψ(ρ,∇ρ) of the form

Mixed variational potentials and inherent symmetries of the Cahn-Hilliard theory of diffusive phase separation.

This work shows that the Cahn-Hilliard theory of diffusive phase separation is related to an intrinsic mixed variational principle that determines the rate of concentration and the chemical potential. The principle characterizes a canonically compact model structure, where the two balances involved for the species content and microforce appear as the Euler equations of a variational statement. ...

Weakly Nonlocal Irreversible Thermodynamics- the Guyer-krumhansl and the Cahn-hilliard Equations

Examples of irreversible thermodynamic theory of nonlocal phenomena are given, based on generalized entropy current. Thermodynamic currents and forces are identified to derive the Guyer-Krumhansl and Cahn-Hilliard equations. In the latter case Gurtin's rate dependent additional term is received through the thermodynamic approach.
